Booking domestic flights in Peru? All you need to know

One of the things that makes Peru such a fascinating and diverse country is its geography. However, this incredible geography can also pose some challenges when trying to get from one destination to another and choosing the best way to get around Peru. While buses and trains are common ways to travel, the most convenient option by far is flying.

Since we know this can be a tricky topic for many people visiting Peru for the first time, we’ve updated our travel guide on domestic flights in Peru. We get lots of questions about this, so we’re here to share our tips, recommendations, and everything you need to know to make the right decisions when booking your next flight within Peru.

Getting Around Peru by Plane: The Main Destinations

Lima is the capital of Peru and the country’s main air travel hub, both for international and domestic flights. Most travelers flying within Peru will connect through Lima. Fortunately, many of Peru’s most popular and frequently visited destinations are just a short flight away, typically between 1 to 2 hours from the capital.

In the south, key cities like Cusco, Arequipa, Juliaca (Puno), Puerto Maldonado, and Ayacucho are all accessible by plane. In the north, you can fly to Trujillo (La Libertad), Chiclayo (Lambayeque), Chachapoyas (Amazonas), Piura, Tumbes, and Iquitos.

Flights to major destinations like Cusco and Arequipa often operate several times a day. However, smaller or more remote cities may have limited service, with just one or two flights daily, or even only a few flights per week. To ensure you find a flight schedule that works for your itinerary, we recommend checking availability on airline websites well in advance.

Jorge Chavez International Airport

Now, let’s talk about airports, starting with the recently launched New Jorge Chávez International Airport, which began full operations at the beginning of this month. As of June 1, all flights and airport services have officially moved to this brand-new terminal, replacing the old one entirely.

Designed to double the airport’s capacity from 15 to 30 million passengers a year, the new terminal features modern, sustainable infrastructure and updated technology to improve both efficiency and the overall travel experience.

Since the airport has only been operating for about a month, and now has 27 more boarding gates than before, we recommend arriving with plenty of time in advance. This will help you avoid possible traffic on Morales Duárez Avenue and give you enough time to go through security and find your gate without stress.

Which airline is the best for booking my domestic flights within Peru?

If you’ve already booked your trip to Peru, or are in the middle of planning, it’s likely you’re now looking into domestic flights in Peru. Flying is definitely the best way to cover long distances and explore different regions in less time.

So, which airlines operate within Peru, and which ones are the best to fly with?

There aren’t a ton of options, but the main ones are reliable and offer frequent departures. We usually recommend LATAM Airlines, as they have the most routes and daily flights within Peru, along with a good track record for punctuality and fewer cancellations. That said, we always suggest checking the schedules and fares that best fit your itinerary.

Pros: Short lines, small and comfortable planes, and a friendly team.

Recommendations when booking a flight within Peru

Now that you know which airlines to consider when booking a domestic flight in Peru, here are some tips and recommendations to help you choose and book your next flight.

#1 Choose your flight schedule according to the season.

Even the most reliable airlines can experience delays during the rainy season. To reduce the risk of cancellations due to weather, we recommend booking flights that depart or arrive in the morning. Afternoon and evening flights are more likely to be canceled, especially from December to March, when weather conditions can be unpredictable.

#2 Check the fares and conditions carefully

Always read the fine print when selecting your fare. Not all rates include carry-on or checked baggage, and lately, only one out of the five main airlines includes them in their lowest fare. Adding luggage at the airport can cost you a fortune, so it's best to plan ahead and include it when booking.

#3 Consider enough spare time between connecting flights

If you're flying from Cusco to Lima to catch your international flight, make sure to leave plenty of time between flights. You should aim to be at Lima’s airport at least 3 hours before your international departure to allow time for immigration and security, and to reach your gate.

Pro Tip: Choose the left side of the plane!

Flying from Lima to southern Peru (Cusco, Arequipa, Puno, etc.)? Try selecting a seat on the left side of the aircraft for the best views of the Andes as you approach your destination. It’s a small tip that makes for a big reward: epic mountain views from the sky!

Whether you're heading to the Andes, the Amazon, or the coast, booking the right domestic flights can make all the difference in your Peru experience. With a bit of planning, and the right airline, you’ll be flying smoothly around Peru. And if you ever need a hand figuring it all out, you know where to find us.

Safe travels and see you in Peru!
